2025 Microgrid Development Task Force - PR Energy Week 25
The Lack of a Approved Technical Microgrid Regulation in PR
March 2025-2026
12-month goal: Formed during Puerto Rico Energy Week 2025, the PR Microgrid Development Task Force aligned on the critical obstacle presented by Angel Zayas: Regarding stakeholder collaboration for microgrid development, a critical obstacle to collectively overcome in 12-months to achieve Puerto Rico’s climate, health and energy goals is: lack of an approved Technical Microgrid Regulation.
Current 90-day Sprint: June 2025, representatives from agencies, companies, cooperatives and technical organizations met to work on an urgent problem: the delays faced by microgrid projects due to lack of coordination between the permitting, interconnection and regulatory processes. During the MAPA Workshop, concrete steps were identified that each entity can take to streamline these processes, so that microgrids can be implemented faster in communities that today depend on an unstable system.
2025 Municipal Task Force - PR Energy Week 25
Driving Sustainability Efforts with City of Isabela
March 2025-2026
12-month goal: The task force's mission is to drive sustainability efforts at the municipal level, starting in the City of Isabela, with the long-term goal of creating a positive impact across the entire island in 2026. So far, the task force has met with the Mayor of Isabela to discuss collaboration and strategies to reduce energy waste. While there was some debate within the group about the different approaches to the campaign, we are excited to finally get active in the community by engaging in upcoming events.
Current 90-day Sprint: Set up an informational booth or encourage a public show of support from the mayor. The upcoming festivals we are looking at are Festival de la Yuca, October 18-19, and Festival Isabela Tiene Sabor, November 1-2. Additionally, the team is exploring the use of battery-powered generators at these events as a cleaner alternative to diesel, demonstrating a practical commitment to sustainable practices while continuing to build community involvement from the ground up.
